What I Love About Austin ~ South By Southwest (SXSW)

 

South By Southwest is coming soon and it has grown into the largest event in Austin.  It started in 1987 and now encompasses music, film, interactive media, conferences, exhibitions and a trade show.  It runs from March 9th through the 18th this year.

The music festival this year features groups like, Starcrawler, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Acid Tounge, Bad Moves, BeatKing, Cedric Burnside, CHAI, David Ramirez, Dark Bird, Ellevator, FAZI, Graham Reynolds, Heartstreets, India Ramey, Jake Lloyd, KANGA, Le Couleur, Mantra, Novella, Inc., The Outer Vibe and many, many others.

SXSW sessions range from code and programming sessions, gaming, marketing, startups, food, music and many more.  Featured speakers include Paul Duncan with Amazon, Nanjira Sambuli

As we inch closer and closer to Spring Austin's calendar of events really starts to heat up!  With SXSW just over a month away and the Austin marathon taking place on February 18th there is something for everyone.  Below we've put together a calendar of our favorite events happening across Austin and surrounding Hill Country.

Super Bowl Sunday is now on the horizon and with hometown quarterback Nick Foles of Westlake High School at the helm of the Philadelphia Eagles there is a lot of local excitement about this Sunday's game!  If your looking to get out of the house and join in with the Super Bowl hysteria we've put together a list of the best spots to watch the game across Austin below with help from our friends at Eater Austin.  

Super Bowl LI and everything below takes place on Sunday, February 4, with kick-off beginning at 5:30 p.m. In no particular order below here are some fun spots to catch the game!

There were a lot of factors at the national and state level that would indicate a housing slowdown with Hurricane Harvey and the overhaul of the tax code, but locally homes in the In the Austin-Round Rock MSA grew at a record breaking pace in 2017.  Although compared to the previous few years there has been a normalization in the market and a large increase of new homes available throughout Austin, the price of homes increased by 5.4 percent to $299,900 in 2017. Home sales increased annually by 2.4 percent to 30,059 sales, an all-time high for the area.

Although it probably doesn't come as a much of a surprise to local Austinites, it is still really cool to get national accolades recognizing Austin's South 1st Street.  Money Magazine correctly points out that South 1st may be South Congress's red headed step child it has a lot to offer without all the crowds.  Check out what the author of the piece had to say about this funky Austin neighborhood!  

South First ranks eighth among the magazine’s 10 hippest ’hoods in the U.S. for tourists and business travelers. No other neighborhood in Texas shows up on the list, which appears in the magazine’s January/February 2018 print edition.

What I Love About Austin ~ Austin Weather

Okay, so it's in the 20's at night in Austin at this writing.  That’s unusual.  Austin temperatures are running considerably below normal.  While the weather is not the most dramatic subject, it is one of the things I absolutely love about Austin.  We have great weather and most Austinites wear shorts year round.  The weather is one of the main attractors that causes so many people to move the area.

According to USClimateData.com, the average high temperature in Austin is 79.8 and the Average low temperature is 59.  With a year round average of 69.4.  And while the current temp is below what everyone would like, normally, the weather is great in Austin.  Even in the middle of winter.
