What I Love About Austin ~ SoCo (South Congress Avenue)
SoCo is the heart of what makes Austin, well, Austin. From food trucks, street musicians, one-of-a-kind shops, restaurants and boutique hotels, South Congress embodies, “Keep Austin Weird” and is the true spirit of the uniqueness of Austin.
First Thursday takes place on the first Thursday of every month on South Congress. Shops stay open late and SoCo hosts arts and crafts vendors along with other events and activities.
There’s the legendary and large, Allen’s Boots with the giant red boot sign. It has a large selection of boots and a friendly staff to help you find just the right pair of cowboy boots to fit your taste. 1522 South Congress Avenue. http://www.allensboots.com/
Guero’s Taco Bar has been a staple since 1986 and serves true “Tex-Mex” along with their own brand of margaritas and most Mexican beers. It also features live music, a full bar and can get packed on the week-ends. 1412 South Congress Avenue. http://gueros.com/

The art of the unusual and the well worn is the domain of, Uncommon Objects, a quaint shop on the drag. It also reflects things that Keep Austin Weird, and unique. Lucy In Disguise with Diamonds sells costumes, masks, wigs, makeup, and accessories. It also sells shoes, boots, jewelry, boas and by its own description, “gaud”. 1506 S Congress Avenue. https://www.lucyindisguise.com/
The Austin Motel receives great reviews, four out of five stars on TripAdvisor, and it’s sign is a mainstay of South Congress with its unique sayings, like, “So Close Yet So Far Out”. South Congress Café serves crab cakes, calamari, ceviche, and bison carpaccio. The menu is primarily sea food and beef, or bison, sprinkled with salads and vegetables. If you like hot, many of the items are served spicy. http://www.southcongresscafe.com/
